after a discussion of the debate towards class in an industrial society, this article
goes into a detailed analysis of the impact of the growth of the services sector in shaping
the ideas of class in contemporary societies, with special emphasis on employment patterns
in the USA and in Latin America. The validity of the Law of Value in modern societies
is also discussed.

This work revolves around the search for a conceptual framework for the study
of the formulation of agricultural policies in Brazil using the new political economy methodology.
Even under the military dictatorship, the analysis provides insights into a multiplicity
of groups of interest and sectors working under the state framework.

Production and employment relations in agriculture in the Northeast

In the Northeastern region of Brazil, the labor force has been historically underutilized.
Recent studies have shown that not only this underutilization is growing, but also
the quality of work is not improving as well. This work has two objectives. On the one hand,
it discusses how there is a close relationship between the production relations and the utilization
of the labor force, while on the other hand it debates the impacts of changes in these
production relations.

Current economic policy and the missteps of monetarism

After years of stimulus to foreign indebtment, since 1976 the Brazilian government
has been under great difficulty in closing the gaps in the balance of payments. New
monetary policies have been issued since 1979, under the most orthodox economic theory
guidance. In this paper, we discuss the difficulty in the orthodox policy to present results and
lowering inflation in Brazil.
